Individual and Couples Therapy in Birmingham and the West Midlands

What is Couples Counselling?

Couples counselling is for any two people in a relationship. This includes married couples, civil partners and partners. I work with couples whatever their sexual orientation. I also offer relationship counselling to people in non-romantic relationships for example, parents and their adult children or stepchildren, and siblings.

I support couples to explore and resolve issues which are causing tension, disagreements and arguments. We explore how factors including current and past events, outside influences and personal histories impact the relationship. Through our work together, we improve communication and understanding in order to encourage growth and fulfilment within the relationship and equip you with tools to resolve future difficulties.

In relationship counselling, my core approach is Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT). This goes beyond simply changing how you communicate or negotiate disagreements. Together, we will work towards creating a more secure emotional bond, helping you to develop greater trust, intimacy and satisfaction in your relationship, and a stronger sense of security with one another.

Some couples come to me when they are facing a crisis such as an affair or betrayal. Others need help to work through long term problems. I have a particular interest in supporting couples navigating transitions in their relationship including becoming parents, menopause, and children growing up and leaving home. I will support both of you as you work through your difficulties. I don't take sides.

How can Couples Counselling help?

Some couples come to me when they are facing a crisis, while others need support to work through long-term difficulties. Throughout the process, my focus is on helping you both feel heard and understood, and feel more able to move forward — whether you choose to do so together or separately — with care and mutual respect.

Common issues I work with include:

  • Affairs and betrayals
  • Trust issues
  • Communication difficulties
  • Sex and intimacy
  • Separation and divorce
  • Difficulties involving families, including step families and blended families
  • Recurring arguments and unresolved conflict
  • Life events including becoming parents, children leaving home and retirement
  • Parenting
  • Issues around finances and money
  • Differing values, beliefs and opinions
  • Illness, bereavement and redundancy

I offer two different structures for couples therapy, allowing you to choose the approach best suited to your relationship, availability and needs.

Get in touch

If you think you may benefit from counselling or if you are unsure, please get in touch by completing the form, calling me on 07396843548 or email me, to arrange an introductory call. This is an opportunity to talk about what you are looking for from counselling and how I can help. It is also a chance for us to get to know each other a bit and gauge whether we would be a good fit. You can ask any questions you have and if you decide to go ahead, we can book your first session (subject to availability).

For couples I prefer to speak to both partners at the same time but if this is not possible I will offer you each an introductory call.

If I am not the right person for you, I can signpost you to providers offering the support you need.

I endeavour to return calls within 24 hours.

Complete the contact form, email me or text/call me on 07396843548.

All contact is strictly confidential and uses secure phone and email services.
